Museum. Gender. Digitization. : A gender-analytical case-study of digitized museum collections in DigitaltMuseum (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

An object is examined through an analysis of gender in relation to digitization on the platform DigitalMuseum. Digitizing collections is a way of making cultural heritage available. The narratives presented aim to be inclusive to all people and a way through which these are invited to take part of the cultural heritage, through self-recognition. This is why democratization is often called upon and invoked as a process when collections are digitized. The study examines narratives and gender-awareness through Hirdmans theory of the male norm. The study shows the material to be categorized through gender binaries, which is considered to be one of the factors of which in-equality between genders is based on. The study further examines digitization as technology through a gender-conscious lens. The study shows that search-results are sorted in ”a criterium of relevance” that could benefit a male norm.
