This essay studies the embodiment of olfactory senses in The Scent of us: Part One and The Scent of Us: Part Two by Eliana Lee. Lees books are a part of the Omegaverse genre which is a form of alternative universe where characters get assigned a designation of either alpha, beta or omega. In this specific omegaverse scent is a big factor in romantic relationships. “Creating the Senses”: Sensation in the work of Shelley Jackson by Tove Solander is used to examine these olfactory descriptions of characters and break down if and how the reader experience “literary phantom sensations” that Solander writes about in her thesis. The essay also examines how the olfactory descriptions represent the characters and how the scents evolve with their relationships. This is mainly done with the help of Solander but also Jim Drobnicks anthology The Smell Culture Reader to get a wider perspective of how olfactory sensations is used in analysis and is then applied to this essay. The olfactory descriptions are analyzed and examined to see how the relationship and characters are affected by it, but the main focus lays on how Lee uses written language to make the reader experience literary phantom smell.
