Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the voluntarily childfree, their experiences in relation to friends, family and the general environment. Also to put their perspective in the context of norms about gender and family formation. A qualitative study that has been conducted via semi-structured interviews. The theoretical framework used in the study is Perry R. Hinton's understanding of stereotypes, Ulrich Beck in support to understanding how society changes via how modernity left its mark with individualization. As well as Miriam A. Glucksmann to talk about how temporality affects modern society, Anna Hedenus, Sofia Björk & Oksana Shmulyar Green's interpretation of the concept of family sociology, but also Gidden's interpretation of gender socialization and gender role learning. The result shows a generally positive reaction, but that a response of questioning, prejudice and negative stereotypes from people in their surroundings was still experienced. Generally the results show that the societal norms are still that people are expected to want to have children. The results showed that the motivation behind the choice to be childfree is based on the fact that they feel no longing for children as well as a fear of what the future of the world looks like.
