Abstract [en]

This project explores the siren as a musical instrument. Furthermore, we interrogate how a disk-based siren instrument can engage music practitioners in the knowledge–bearing potential of music–making tools. Following a media archaeological approach we engage with the siren’s ethics and epistemic di- mensions. The Sirenology workshop, methodologically drawn around the principles of participatory design and Do It With Others, aims to prioritize user empowerment by enabling participants to design their own siren disks. The workshop–goers generate knowledge by engaging with their own values, pref- erences, theoretical understanding of the siren’s sound physics or lack thereof to approach the design task, embracing the influence of the group’s dynamics. In conclusion, I identify two key paths for fur- ther investigation: 1) laying the groundwork towards a generalizable workshop methodology to uncover knowledge in musical instruments, and 2) examining how the learning gained by the participants of such workshops can be applied to understand the limitations of consumer music-making tools.
