Abstract [en]

This research focuses on personal photo archives, one of the fastest-growing forms of digital media in terms of size. This paper consists of two parts–the first is an investigation of current practices and behaviors related to the creation and management of personal digital photo archives, while also identifying how individuals attribute ’meaning’ and significance to both digital and physical mementos. The second part of this paper leverages this understanding and describes the design, deployment, and evaluation of the Memory Vending Machine—a digital provocation that presents a new way of interacting with photos in our galleries. The machine acted as a channel for participants to connect with individual photos from their galleries in a more conscious and meaningful manner. It presented an alternative form of interaction with photo archives and provoked reflection on the emotional value of photographs. The Memory Vending Machine disrupted conventional photo-browsing experiences, prompting participants to reconsider their relationship with their digital archives. This paper contributes to the fields of Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) by highlighting the potential of interactive technology to foster mindful, reflective interactions with personal digital artifacts, encouraging deeper emotional engagement and reflection on memory.

Denna studie fokuserar på personliga fotoarkiv, en av de snabbast växande formerna av digitala medier sett till storlek. Denna uppsats består av två delar – första delen undersöker nuvarande praxis samt beteenden relaterade till skapandet och hanteringen av personliga digitala fotoarkiv, samtidigt identifierar den hur individer tillskriver "mening" och signifikans till både digitala och fysiska memorabilia. Den andra delen av uppsatsen nyttjar denna kunskap och beskriver designen, driftsättningen och utvärderingen av Minnesautomaten – en digital provokation som presenterar ett nytt sätt att interagera med bilder i våra fotoalbum. Automaten agerade som en slags kanal där deltagarna kunde få en djupare och mer meningsfull relation med enskilda bilder från sina fotoalbum på ett mer medvetet sätt. Den presenterade en alterna- tiv form av interaktion med fotoarkiv och väckte reflektion kring fotografiernas känslomässiga värde. Minnesautomaten bröt konventionella fotobläddringsupplevelser, vilket fick deltagarna att omvärdera sitt förhållningssätt till sina digitala arkiv. Denna uppsats bidrar till forskningsområdet Människa-Dator Interaktion (MDI) genom att belysa teknologins potential för att främja medvetna och reflektionsbaserade interaktioner med personliga digitala artefakter, uppmuntra till djupare känslomässigt engagemang och reflektion över minnet.
