Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background:Palliative care aims to alleviate pain, manage symptoms, and provide support to patients and their families at the end of life. Nurses play a key role in balancing medical, emotional, and social needs to promote quality of life. Previous research highlights the importance of coordination, communication, and support for patients and their families. Aim: To explore nurses and their experiences of working in palliative care, focusing on challenges and opportunities. Method: A literature review based on thirteen scientific articles, including eleven qualitative and two quantitative studies, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Results: Five themes were identified: Communication and coordination were crucial in meeting the needs of patients and their families. Emotional challenges such as stress and moral distress required effective coping strategies. Competence and education were key factors in managing the complexity of care. Balancing patients and families needs in terms of autonomy and support was highlighted as as a central challenge. Conclusion: Nurses perceive palliative care as meaningful but face challenges such as time constraints, resource limitations, and communication barriers. To enhance care quality and the work environment, continuous education, organizanional support, and improved communication within the healthcare team are necessary.
