Abstract [sv]

Detta examensarbete behandlade betygsresultat i gymnasiets kurser Kemi 1 och Kemi 2. Speciellt undersöktes hur betygen i Kemi 2 beror av betygen i Kemi 1 i ljuset av “förkunskapsprincipen”. Litteraturen ger många exempel på hur förkunskaper (prior knowledge) är en förutsättning för senare lyckade studieresultat.

Forskningsfrågan var: “Hur stor andel av de elever som blev underkända i Kemi 2 hade tidigare blivit underkända i Kemi 1?”. Frågan besvarades med hjälp av betygsstatistik från Skolverket på riksnivå. Resultaten över tid undersöktes med statistik för vart tredje år under perioden 2015-2024.

En skillnad i betygsnivåer mellan Teknikprogrammet (Te) och Naturvetenskapsprogrammet (Na) noterades för Kemi 1. Kemi 2 läses nästan uteslutande av elever på Na-programmet.

Av de elever som hade underkänt, alltså betyg F, i Kemi 1 var det endast 22% som fick ett godkänt betyg i Kemi 2. Av de som klarat godkänt betyg E i Kemi 1 var det 83% som fick ett godkänt betyg också i Kemi 2.

Slutsatsen är att resultaten stödjer tesen att förkunskaper motsvarande ett godkänt betyg i Kemi 1 är en viktig faktor för att kunna få ett godkänt betyg i kursen Kemi 2. Alltså borde förkunskapsprincipen kunna tillämpas och krav på godkänt betyg i Kemi 1 ställas för att kunna läsa kursen Kemi 2.

Fortsatta studier som rekommenderas är en ny statistikjämförelse 2027 som är sista året med läroplanen Gy11. Efter 2028 har eleverna studerat enligt den nya läroplanen Gy 25, så då vore det intressant att göra om studien. En elevenkät och intervjuer med några gymnasielärare vore också intressant.

Abstract [en]

This thesis studied grades in the upper secondary school courses Chemistry 1 and Chemistry 2. In particular, it studied how grades in Chemistry 2 depend on grades in Chemistry 1 in the light of the “prior knowledge” principle. The literature provides many examples of how prior knowledge is a prerequisite for successful study results later on.

The research question was: “What proportion of students who failed Chemistry 2 had previously failed Chemistry 1?”. The question was answered using grade statistics from the Swedish National Agency for Education at national level. The results over time were examined using statistics for every third year under the period 2015-2024.

A difference in grade levels between the Technology Programme (Te) and the Natural Sciences Programme (Na) was noted for Chemistry 1. Chemistry 2 is studied almost exclusively by students in the Na programme.

Of the students who failed, i.e. received grade F, in Chemistry 1, only 22% received a passing grade in Chemistry 2. Of those who had the lowest passing grade E in Chemistry 1, 83% also received a passing grade in Chemistry 2.

The conclusion is that the statistics support the thesis that prior knowledge corresponding to a passing grade in Chemistry 1 is a prerequisite for being able to pass the course Chemistry 2. Therefore, the prior knowledge principle should be applied and a passing grade in Chemistry 1 should be required in order to take the course Chemistry 2.

Continued studies that are recommended are a new statistical comparison in 2027 which is the last year with the curriculum Gy11. After 2028, the students will have studied according to the new curriculum Gy 25, so it would be of interest to repeat the study then. A student survey and interviews with some upper secondary school teachers would also be interesting.
