Abstract [en]
Background: Palliative care at the end of life aims to alleviate suffering and promote patients' physical, psychological, social and existential well-being. A key aspect is to consider the needs of both patients and families, which requires communication between nurses, patients and families. Research shows that communication between nurses, patients and families is often poor, leading to anxiety and uncertainty about care and decisions. Many patients express a need for clearer information and more involvement in their care. Relatives ask for more support and empathy. Aim: To describe nurses' experiences of palliative care at the end of life. Method: Literature review based on ten qualitative and three quantitative articles Results: Five main themes were identified as central to highlighting nurses' challenges in palliative care. These themes include both structural and individual-related factors that affect the quality of care. Conclusion: Knowledge, education and experience are essential for high-quality palliative care. Emotional processing, effective communication, good relationships with family members and collaboration within the care team are key factors in maintaining good quality of care at the end of life.
