Abstract [en]

The subject of this essay is Swedish news reporting of war from a sociological perspective. News media has an important role as a provider of information and can today reach large numbers of people around the clock. News media can contribute to give a certain image of both particular areas and the people who live there, for example by only reporting on negative events from a specific area. Although the main purpose of news reporting is to present information about a certain event, a news article can be designed in many different ways and from different perspectives. The selected wars, the reporting of which is analyzed in this essay, are those between Israel and Hamas starting on October 7, 2023 and Ukraine and Russia starting on February 24, 2022. The articles, in turn, have been taken from Dagens Nyheter. The aim is to investigate, based on these two seperate wars, wether Swedish news media make a difference in their reporting using the research questions: What differences can be seen in Dagens Nyheter's news reporting on the war in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine? How can these differences be understood and explained? To answer the research questions, 30 articles from Dagens nyheter have been analyzed using qualitive content analysis as a method. The theoretical framework for this essay consists of Nils Christie's "ideal victim", Stanley Cohen's "moral panic", Stuart Hall on news production and Ylva Brune's "the others". The result shows differences in the form of inclusion of quotes and statements from politicians/spokespersons, aid organizations, experts and civilians to varying extent, bias in favor of a particular side through negative representations of others and victim representations. These differences can be explained using the paper's theoretical framework and previous rsearch.
