The Role of Parental Involvement in Academic Achievement of Adolescent Boys and Girls

Abstract [en]

Using data from the 2022 PISA database on the academic performance of German 15-year-olds, and answers from parental questionnaires, this study aims to understand the impact of parental involvement on academic achievement on adolescent boys and girls and to investigate if parental involvement is moderated by gender and immigrant status. Household income is used as a proxy for socioeconomic status and was included in the models as a covariate. Academic performance was measured by three different PISA tests: math, reading and science. The results of the study showed that the relationship between parental involvement and academic performance was not moderated by gender or immigrant status. Parental involvement had no significant effect on PISA reading or science scores, however, parental involvement had a negative effect on PISA math scores. That is, parents who were involved in their children education negatively predicted the child’s math performance, yet the effect was small. Children from immigrant households had lower academic performance across all three PISA tests. Children from a high-income household had higher academic performance across all three tests. In conclusion, levels of parental involvement do not seem to be an important predictor of children’s academic performance. On the other hand, immigration status and socioeconomic class appear to be the most important predictors of a child’s academic success.

Med data från 2022 års PISA-databas om tyska 15-åringars akademiska prestationer och svar från föräldraenkäter syftar denna studie till att förstå påverkan av föräldrars engagemang på akademiska prestationer hos tonårspojkar och -flickor samt att undersöka om föräldrars engagemang modereras av kön och invandrarstatus. Hushållsinkomst används som en proxy för socioekonomisk status och inkluderades i modellerna som en kovariat. Akademisk prestation mättes genom tre olika PISA-test: matematik, läsning och naturvetenskap. Resultaten av studien visade att sambandet mellan föräldrars engagemang och akademisk prestation inte modererades av kön eller invandrarstatus. Föräldrars engagemang hade ingen signifikant effekt på PISA-resultaten i läsning eller naturvetenskap, men föräldrars engagemang hade en negativ effekt på PISA-resultaten i matematik. Det vill säga, föräldrar som var engagerade i sina barns utbildning förutsade negativt barnets matematikprestation, även om effekten var liten. Barn från invandrarhushåll hade lägre akademisk prestation i alla tre PISA-testen. Barn från hushåll med hög inkomst hade högre akademisk prestation i alla tre testen. Sammanfattningsvis verkar nivån av föräldrars engagemang inte vara en viktig prediktor för barns akademiska prestation. Å andra sidan verkar invandrarstatus och socioekonomisk klass vara de viktigaste prediktorerna för ett barns akademiska framgång.
