The road to safety: How different forms of social support and individual vulnerability factors are linked to older adults fear of crime (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The fear of crime among older adults is a serious problem, as it can lead to significant negative consequences for their mental and physical health. Previous research on the subject has been carried out, however most of these studies were carried out several years ago and resulted in varying conclusions. This quantitative study chose to investigate whether there is a relationship between different forms of social support (partner, family, friends) and older adult's fear of crime. The study also investigated the relationship between the older adults' individual vulnerability factors (gender, housing situation, subjective health, anxiety, depression) and different types of social support, linked to older adults' fear of crime. The survey had a cross-sectional design, which is based on previous studies and data from the IDA program in 2023. The sample consisted of 276 men and 349 women (N = 634), aged between 67 and 69 years old. To examine which social support and what individual vulnerability factors had the strongest association, a multiple regression analysis was conducted. The result showed that social support from friends had a significant negative association with older adult's fear of crime (β = -.17, p = .001), while no significant association between social support partner (β = .049, p = .41) or family (β = .088, p =.13) could be demonstrated. The individual vulnerability factors that were found to have a significant association with older adult's fear of crime were gender (β = .22, p = .008), anxiety (β = .34, p < .001) and subjective health (β = -.1, p = .024), the conclusion of the study's findings is that social support from friends and individual vulnerability factors such as gender, anxiety and subjective health are linked to older adults fear of crime.
