Understanding how players experience a game for the first time is vital for creating an interest and keeping them playing. This study investigates the introductory level of Dark Souls III to build a better understanding of how the participants’ (N = 8) first interactions with the difficult game immerses them and whether it does or does not invite them to continue playing. A modified version of the game with increased difficulty was created to see what effects the difficulty has on the participants, with half playing the modified version and half playing the regular version. The results show that difficulty matters little as long as the readability of the game is high – signifying the importance of making the player feel that the game sufficiently conveys information to the player.
