From swipe to conversation : A study on how the features of dating apps influence users' propensity to make contact and continue interaction with other users (English)
Abstract [en]

The proliferation of mobile dating apps has transformed the landscape of romantic interactions, introducing new dynamics and challenges in how individuals connect and form relationships. This study investigates the intricate interplay between interface design and user experiences on these platforms. By integrating affordance theory, self-disclosure theory, and a socio-constructionist ontological approach, the research aims to unravel the complex ways in which interface elements shape user behavior, decision-making processes, and interpersonal dynamics within the context of dating apps. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from online surveys with qualitative insights from interface analyses. The online surveys capture demographic information, user habits, design preferences, and overall app experiences from a diverse respondent pool. Complementing this, the interface analyses delve into the intricate details of design elements, affordances, and information architecture across popular dating apps. The findings reveal that interface design significantly influences user self-presentation, decision-making processes, and the depth of self-disclosure during interactions. Factors such as profile layouts, matching algorithms, and information presentation play a pivotal role in shaping user perceptions and behaviors. Furthermore, the study highlights how design choices can inadvertently reinforce or challenge societal norms and biases related to gender, identity, and inclusivity. By bridging theoretical frameworks from human-computer interaction, psychology, and communication studies, this research contributes a holistic understanding of the intricate interplay between interface design and user experiences in the realm of mobile dating apps. The insights gained hold significant implications for designers, developers, and researchers alike, informing the creation of more inclusive, effective, and socially responsible platforms that foster meaningful human connections in the digital age.
