Conversion from the Syriac-Orthodox church to pentecostal churches in Sweden : A qualitative study (English)
Abstract [en]

This study describes the journey of religious conversion of Syrians/Assyrians located in Sweden. The goal was to achieve in depth information about their experience, motives and stories moving from the Syriac-Orthodox church to pentecostal churches. The study accomplished this through semi structured interviews and the aim was to explore the following: What motivates conversion, how does conversion affect self-image and religious identity and what challenges and opportunities does conversion bring. The theory used in this study was Pierre Bourdieu's view on the capital, habitus and field and how they correlate to my informants. The Syrians/Assyrians have been motivated by their perception that the Syriac Orthodox Church offers limited opportunities for individual development on various levels. They view the language, theology, and social factors they have experienced within the church as restrictive. After their conversion, they still see themselves as Syrians/Assyrians but in a different congregation than the Syriac-Orthodox church. They express that the conversion has had positive effects on their individual and spiritual levels, while they have faced negative consequences in their social lives.
