Young people and democracy : A qualitative study that deepens the understanding of young people’s political participation (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay aims to study young people's relationship with democracy by investigating their political participation. Formal political engagement and participation have reportedly declined in recent years, with fewer younger people joining political parties and fewer feeling connected to them. Instead, they choose alternative methods to engage in society, as party politics is often perceived as difficult to understand. Similarly, information gathering has undergone changes, with most young people obtaining information online. The study is conducted through qualitative semi-structured interviews with high school students. The participants belong to two different programs, one practical and one theoretical, with an equal number- four individuals- from each class interviewed. The study finds, among other things, that young people do not seem very aware of what political participation can retail. Many state that they have never participated politically, yet later in interviews, it emerges that they actually have, but in less formal ways. While it becomes evident that the interviewees have engaged in politics informally, almost all of them express that if they were to get involved in politics in the future they would prefer to do so by joining a political party, as they perceive parties to have more influence than alternative organizations. The study provides a nuanced view of young people's political participation and, in relation to previous research, creates a picture of how they themselves perceive their role and participation in politics.
