This essay explores how professionals within the police, youth prevention work in social services, and outpatient care in a mid-sized Swedish city experience working with young girls who engage in violence. Through focus group interviews, the authors aim to highlight potential differences in perceptions of young girls who commit acts of violence and the major challenges encountered in working with them.The study reveals that there are more similarities than differences in how the various professional groups view violent youth as individuals, as well as in their understanding of the underlying factors that may explain the violence. The findings indicate that the most challenging aspects of working with these young girls involve a combination of risk factors, mistrust toward the adult world, and the youths’ desire to fit in. Additionally, the study discusses whether violence among girls is a new phenomenon in society or if it has simply not been highlighted previously.
