Abstract [sv]

This essay explores the relationship between the problem of theodicy, the existence and transcendence of God, and the presence of evil in the world. Its has a particular focus on traditional western Christian theodicy especially in Jonbäck & Bråkenhielm´s Problemet med lidande och guds frånvaro and African traditional religion especially in Agada´s ”Rethinking the concept of God and the problem of evil from the perspective of African thought”. The central question addressed is whether the divine attributes of omnipotence, omniscience, and omnibenevolence can be adjusted or negotiated in order to approach a solution to the problem of theodicy. To answer this question, a method based on content analysis of articles and texts is used, building on J.L. Mackie's theoretical framework from 1950, which is used to formulate my own interpretations and structures regarding these divine attributes.

The essay also examines how different religious perspectives, especially those within African traditional religion, can provide new insights into the discussion about the nature of God and the problem of evil. By analyzing these viewpoints in relation to each other, alternative approaches to the problem of theodicy are identified. In the conclusion, a discussion is presented on which of the different perspectives is most coherent and reasonable from ananalytical standpoint, along with suggestions for further research on the topic.
