Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Affiliations to organized criminal groups have been on the rise in Sweden, with a situation described as extensive by Swedish authorities, further empirical findings within the Swedish context is therefore encouraged. Through a thematic analysis of pre-recorded interviews with former and active members of organized crime this study strives to investigate what factors contribute to involvement in organized crime in Sweden. Research on the Swedish context regarding this subject is currently limited. International studies emphasize the importance of adopting multiple factors to understand the complexity. This study adopts a theoretical framework comprising Farrington's Integrated Cognitive Antisocial Potential Theory and Zuckerman's Diathesis Stress Model for a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the factors. The present study showed a complexity, where factors contributing to involvement in organized crime were often a combination of temptations, risk factors, and vulnerabilities. The most prominent factors included pro-criminal contacts, upbringing, and the attraction of financial and material gain. The results of the study highlight the complexity of the concept of organized crime and their development within Swedish society. For a more conclusive understanding of the individual factors influencing participation further research is needed to identify these contributing elements and how to address them, such insights might be essential for designing more effective preventive interventions.
