How does a populist local party behave when its rhetoric leads to exclusion from cooperation with other parties? The local party Örebropartiet, active in Örebro municipality has since it entered the municipal parliament of Örebro, 2018 been excluded from cooperating with the other parties. With the use of a quantitative content analysis this thesis aims to investigate whether the party has gotten more populist or if there’s been a moderation in the party’s rhetoric following the cordon sanitaire that has been established. By applying a predefined framework of thin and thick populism, divided in subcategories the people, anti-elitist and exclusion and by examining debates in the municipal parliament during the years 2021 and 2024 this thesis concludes that Örebropartiet has been moderated to a certain degree. The party uses less anti-elitist rhetoric in 2024 than in 2021. Although the party uses more excluding rhetoric in 2024 than in 2021 the overall usage of rhetoric that goes into the category thick populism has gone down. Furthermore, it’s noted that Örebropartiet has gotten more prone to criticizing other parties or politicians in the municipality parliament, and less prone to criticizing the whole system as a whole.
