Abstract [en]

In this project, we successfully developed a custom soft-body physics simulation from scratch on the Web platform for applications in information visualization, proposing a novel method that we named the blob plot. We hypothesized that such a method could have a similar performance in terms of perception effectiveness when compared to other traditional and well-established area-based visualization methods. We also hypothesized that it might be able to successfully convey to readers an intuition of the underlying imprecision and uncertainty in the data. We designed and conducted a crowdsourced user study (n = 47) to evaluate the method and test our hypothesis. The results of our user study seem to confirm our hypothesis and show that the blob plot might indeed be a viable option in certain contexts, scenarios, and datasets, especially when it is important to highlight uncertainty about the data, such as in government budgetary and economic data.

Abstract [sv]

I det här projektet utvecklade vi framgångsrikt en anpassad simulering av mjuk kroppsfysik från grunden på webbplat- tformen för tillämpningar inom informationsvisualisering, och föreslog en ny metod som vi kallade blob plot. Vi antog att en sådan metod skulle kunna ha en liknande prestanda när det gäller perceptionseffektivitet jämfört med andra traditionella och väletablerade områdesbaserade visualiseringsmetoder. Vi antog också att den framgångsrikt skulle kunna förmedla en intuition till läsarna om den underliggande oprecisionen och osäkerheten i data. Vi utformade och genomförde en användarstudie (n = 47) med hjälp av crowdsourcing för att utvärdera metoden och testa vår hypotes. Resultaten av vår användarstudie verkar bekräfta vår hypotes och visar att blobplotten faktiskt kan vara ett genomförbart alternativ i vissa sammanhang, scenarier och dataset, särskilt när det är viktigt att belysa osäkerheten i uppgifterna, till exempel i statliga budget- och ekonomiska uppgifter.
