Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines the democratic backsliding in Hungary during 2010-2024, with particular focus on how Viktor Orbán's regime has affected the country's democratic institutions and values. By using the Theories of Competitive Authoritarianism as a theoretical framework, four central categories are analyzed: the electoral arena, the legislature, the judiciary and the media. Through a qualitative literature study and analysis of empirical data from international democracy indices, the study sheds light on the gradualchanges in Hungary's political system. The results show that although Hungary retains some democratic features, through Orbán's policies and the related changes in these categories, there has been a marked weakening of democracy, pointing to a trend towards a competitive authoritarian system. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms driving democratic decline and how these may affect the future of Hungary's political landscape.
