Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to examine how Avicii's digital afterlife is constructed through social media and their users. The chosen social media for this study are Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. The main research question is therefore: How is Avicii's digital afterlife constructed through social media? In order to answer this, the essay explores the following sub-questions: What attributes actualize and shape the phenomenon of digital afterlife? How is techno-spirituality achieved in Avicii's social media? Data is collected through the qualitative method content analysis and analyzed using Stuart Hall's model, The Circuit of Culture. The study is based on the theories of digital afterlife and techno-spirituality as developed by Lagerkvist. Additionally, the study includes perspectives from both Marshall McLuhan and Stuart Hall in the theoretical framework, and will be critically discussed together with the empirical material in the analysis. Previous research will be addressed in the concluding discussion to highlight areas of possibilities for future research. The study shows that Avicii's digital afterlife is maintained by people through interaction. This interaction mainly occurs in the comments section where many people talk directly to him, which makes techno-spirituality arise. His digital afterlife is perceived as a dynamic process more than just a memory through the different parts of Stuart Hall's model. This study is of importance both scientifically and societally since this phenomenon challenges the traditional view of death and its digital afterlife through social media, platforms widely used by a significant part of society.
