From Taboo to Visibility: Endometriosis and PCOS in the TikTok Digital Community (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Our study examines how endometriosis and PCOS are represented on Tiktok. The purpose of the study was to investigate through netnography how endometriosis and PCOS sufferers use Tiktok to communicate about their health conditions. The study also aims to analyze Tiktok's potential to make visible and destigmatize the conditions. The implementation of the study took place through a thematic analysis and the collected material from the observations was analyzed based on previous research as well as the theoretical starting points of representation theory and participant culture. The analysis identified five main themes which are "personal experiences", "awareness and knowledge", "challenging stigma and frustration with care", "supportive community" and "visual format". The study shows that Tiktok as a platform has a significant role in making endometriosis and PCOS visible. Endometriosis and PCOS sufferers use the platform to communicate, seek support and share their stories. Finally, the results show that communication about endometriosis and PCOS on Tiktok has great potential to change the general perception of endometriosis and PCOS as well as create awareness and challenge stigma.
