Abstract [sv]

Resultat: I resultatet framkom fem teman.

Abstract [en]

Background: End-of-life care is the final, late phase of palliative care and often involves patients suffering from one or more chronic illnesses that affect their well-being. Patients and relatives experienced that communication with healthcare professionals is crucial in end-of-life care; however, they often experienced communication as inadequate. Aim: To describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients in the end-of-life phase. Method: A general literature review based on eleven articles, nine of which were qualitative, one quantitative, and one mixed-method. Results: The results emerged five themes. Nurses described the importance of building good relationships with both patients and their families. Furthermore, the importance of functioning communication, providing support, and collaboration within the care team was emphasized. Nurses also experienced a need for further education to improve end-of-life care. The results also showed that nurses experienced strong and mixed emotions when providing end-of-life care. Conclusion: Nurses have both positive and negative experiences of providing end-of-life care. Nurses, patients, and relatives all agreed that poor communication was a barrier that negatively impacted care. Nurses expressed an increased need for knowledge, as end-of-life care was perceived as challenging.
