Abstract [en]
Since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic in December 2019, governments have been prompted worldwide to implement various containment policies aimed at reducing its transmission and mortality rates. This study examines the association between government stringency measures, as quantified by the Oxford Stringency Index, and excess mortality rates between the years 2020-2022. The research addresses two primary questions: Firstly, the extent to which stringency measures are associated with excess mortality, and how it changed over the course of the pandemic. Since this relationship might be confounded, a few relevant variables were controlled for. Secondly, how changes in stringency measures affected changes in mortality rates. The methods used include statistical analyses, where linear and multiple regression models were employed to evaluate these associations. The results indicate a statistically significant negative relationship between the stringent index and excess mortality in 2021, suggesting that stricter measures were effective in reducing mortality rates during that year. However, for 2020 and 2022, there was a statistically non-significant association between these two variables, implying the complexity of the factors influencing pandemic outcomes. The results also show that, in terms of the relationship between our two variables, adjusting for the selected confounders does not seem to matter, in which other variables might play a more significant role here. These findings underscore the importance of a nuanced approach to pandemic management and policy making, considering public compliance, healthcare capacity, vaccination distribution, etc. demonstrating the complexity of government interventions and their effectiveness in mitigating pandemic mortality.
