This study aims to examine how Gröna Lund has managed its crisis communication following the Jetline accident in June 2023. The goal is to contribute to filling the current knowledge gap on research regarding post-crisis communication. Therefore the study aims to answer the following question: Which strategies, according to Coombs Situational Crisis Communication Theory, can be identified in Gröna Lund`s crisis communication in the acute crisis phase and the post-crisis phase following the Jetline-accident on June 25, 2023? The study conducted a qualitative content analysis of Gröna Lunds press releases, website and annual report using the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) as the theoretical framework to guide the analysis of the crisis communication strategies. Results revealed how the prominent strategy used by Gröna Lund is what SCCT defines as “rebuild crisis response strategies” including compensation and positive actions replacing negative ones. However, through analysis of post-crisis communication, different strategies appear which suggest less accountability. These are defined as scapegoat and excuses. The range of strategies causes confusion and lack of clarity about the amount of responsibility Gröna Lund takes for what happened. An area on which SCCT bases its recommended strategies. Finally, the findings highlight the critical question of how amusement parks can effectively communicate safety to the public, given the evident risks and inherent limitations in ensuring absolute safety of attractions.
