Since the English language is used internationally, a large majority of people want to learn this language all over the world. However, speaking in English is not straightforward, as many factors, including speakers’ native language or L1 and the English prosodic system, can influence speakers’ pronunciation. This study investigated L1 Dari Persian speakers' usage of English word stress. In this study, 20 adult L1 Dari Persian participants were selected, all of whom had a proficiency level of English 6. Participants were asked to read out 40 pre-selected English words while being audio-recorded. The selected words belonged to different word classes: 20 verbs and 20 nouns. They consisted of 20 two-syllable and 20 three-syllable words with different places of main stress. PRAAT software was used to determine the prominent syllables by studying the spectrogram and waveform of the recorded audio. Chi-square tests were applied to determine whether the differences between categories were significant. The results showed that the participants in this study had more difficulty with three-syllable words than two-syllable words. Participants were more successful in applying English word stress in nouns than verbs, but the differences were not significant. The results also revealed that these participants tended to transfer the habits of their L1 and stressed the last syllable of words.

Eftersom det engelska språket används internationellt vill en stor majoritet av människor lära sig detta språk över hela världen. Att prata engelska är dock inte lätt, eftersom många faktorer, inklusive talarens modersmål och det engelska prosodiska systemet, kan påverka talarens uttal. Denna studie undersökte Dari persiska talares användning av engelsk ordaccent. I denna studie valdes 20 vuxna Dari Persiska deltagare ut, som alla hade en kunskapsnivå motsvarande engelska 6. Deltagarna ombads att läsa upp 40 förvalda engelska ord samtidigt som de spelades in. De valda orden tillhörde olika ordklasser: 20 verb och 20 substantiv. De bestod av 20 tvåstaviga och 20 trestaviga ord med olika plats av betonad stavelse. PRAAT användes för att bestämma de betonade stavelserna genom att studera spektrogrammet och vågformen för det inspelade ljudet. Chi-två-tester användes för att avgöra om skillnaderna mellan kategorierna var signifikanta. Resultaten visade att deltagarna i denna studie hade svårare med trestaviga ord än tvåstaviga ord. Deltagarna var mer framgångsrika i att applicera engelsk ordbetoning i substantiv än verb men skillnaderna var inte signifikanta. Resultaten avslöjade också att dessa deltagare tenderade att överföra vanorna i sitt modersmål och betonade den sista stavelsen av ord.
