The Connection Between the Frequency of Physical Education and Students’ Academic Success : The Amount of Physical Education Lessons Impact on Upper Secondary Students’ Grades (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Previous research has shown a correlation between physical activity (PA), physical education (PE), and a positive effect on academic performance. However, the evidence for how PE affects academic performance is still limited. This study aims to investigate whether there is a correlation between the number of PE lessons per week and students' academic performance in the first year of upper secondary school. A survey was conducted with seven first-year classes, with different dose of PE, examining their academic performance. The results showed that classes with the double dose of PE lessons per week performed better in school, than classes with half the dose. A larger proportion of students with a higher dose of PE lessons had higher grades, and the average grade of the group was higher. The conclusion of the study were that there is a positive correlation between the dose of PE and improved academic performance for upper secondary school students. This was consistent with previous research on the effect of PA on cognition.
