Women’s sexual health in the context of involuntary childlessness : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: One in six people has at some point experienced involuntary childlessness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), women are most severely affected by involuntary childlessness. Sexual health is an important part of overall health and studies have shown that the sexual health is affected by involuntary childlessness. The healthcare is obliged to promoting good sexual health and midwives play a vital role in this regard. There are limited qualitative studies conducted in a Swedish context that describe women’s sexual health in cases of involuntary childlessness.
Aim: To describe women’s experiences of their sexual health in the context of involuntary childlessness.
Method: A qualitative design with an inductive approach was applied. Data was collected through fifteen individual semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed using qualitative content analysis.
Result: The results are presented in three categories: The Body Fails, The Intimate Relationship and The Role of Healthcare with a total of seven subcategories. The findings revealed that women’s sexual health was deprioritized as they tried to conceive. The women described a shift in self-image towards the negative which impacted their sex lives. The intimate relationship was affected by decreased desire and a sense of pressure to have sex although many women felt well-supported by their partners. Healthcare was described as lacking a person-centred approach and the women experiences that they were never asked about their sexual health.
Conclusion: Sexual health is negatively impacted by involuntary childlessness. The women reported not being asked by healthcare services about their sexual health and expressed a desire for more support and information from healthcare providers. Healthcare services need to improve in addressing women's sexual health in cases of involuntary childlessness.
