Integrative Care in Relation to Existentiel suffering : Patients' Experiences in Palliative Care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Integrative care, which combines conventional and complementary treatments, can enhance the well-being of patients in palliative care. As these patients often experience suffering on physical, emotional and existential levels, it is crucial to explore their experiences with integrative care to promote holistic care approaches. The aim of this literature review is to describe how patients in palliative care experience integrative care in relation to existential suffering. Database searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus. A total of 16 caring science articles with various approaches were reviewed and analyzed. The findings indicate that integrative care facilitates both physical and emotional relief, as well as self-reflection and connection with others. Physical relief includes pain reduction, improved sleep and the alleviation of symptoms such as nausea and shortness of breath. Emotionally, patients report increased relaxation, balance and an enhanced ability to cope with their suffering. Furthermore, integrative care contributes to a strengthened sense of presence, identity, and existential support. Patients feel acknowledged in their relationships with caregivers and others, fostering a sense of community and reducing loneliness. In conclusion, the study highlights the potential of integrative care to improve the well-being for patients in palliative care by alleviating suffering, facilitating self-reflection and strengthening patients' identity and relationships.
