Sport and Morality: The Role of Motivational Climate in Promoting or Preventing Antisocial Behavior Among Senior Team Athletes Through Moral Disengagement (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study was to examine which moral disengagement mechanisms predict antisocial behavior toward teammates and opponents. The study also aimed to investigate moral disengagement as a mediator in the relationship between performanceoriented and task-oriented motivational climates and antisocial behavior toward teammates and opponents. This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design, and data were collected through digital surveys. A total of 123 senior athletes (M = 22.56, SD = 4.06) participated in the study, including 58 women and 65 men. The participants had experience and were actively engaged in football, handball, ice hockey, floorball, and basketball at the time of data collection. Based on Achievement Goal Theory, the theory of moral disengagement, and previous research, the following hypotheses were formulated. 1) The mechanism of conduct reconstructual predicts antisocial behavior toward teammates and opponents, 2) Moral disengagement mediates the relationship between a performance-oriented motivational climate and antisocial behavior toward teammates and opponents, 3) Moral disengagement mediates the relationship between a task-oriented motivational climate and antisocial behavior toward teammates and opponents. The hypotheses were supported through two multiple regression analyses and four mediation analyses. The results aligned with theory and previous research, further highlighting the importance of increased understanding of how the motivational climate influences the occurrence of antisocial behaviors.
