Antisocial behavior and its relationship to motivational climate and moral disengagement in senior team athletes (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine which morally disengaging mechanisms predict

antisocial behaviors towards teammates and opponents. Furthermore, the purpose was

to investigate moral disengagement as a mediator in relation to a performance-oriented

motivational climate, as well as a task-oriented motivational climate, and antisocial

behaviors towards teammates and opponents. The study used a quantitative cross-

sectional design and was conducted using a Google Forms survey containing the

MDSS, PABSS, and PMCSQ-2 forms. All participants who completed the survey were

handball, floorball, football, ice hockey, and basketball team athletes at senior level. A

total of 135 participants completed the survey, with 12 excluded due to unclear

responses, resulting in data from 123 participants, consisting of 65 men and 58 women,

with ages ranging from 18 to 40 years. Based on previous research and the theories of

Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) and moral disengagement, the following three

hypotheses were proposed: 1) The mechanism of conduct reconstrual predicts antisocial

behaviors towards teammates and opponents. 2) Moral disengagement mediates the

relationship between ego-involving climate and antisocial behaviors towards teammates

and opponents. 3) Moral disengagement mediates the relationship between a task-

involving climate and antisocial behavior towards teammates and opponents, with a

negative effect. The results of this study, similar to previous studies, confirm the three

hypotheses through two multiple regression analyses and four mediation analyses. The

findings highlight the importance of the motivational climate an athlete belongs to, as

well as its connection to antisocial behavior and moral disengagement.
