Abstract [en]

The majority of Swedish households own their homes and have mortgages, making themvulnerable to various changes in loan conditions, property values, and income. Changesbrought about by the mortgage can thus impact society at large. Therefore, it is interesting tostudy how mortgagors perceive changes in their economy with the mortgage. The study isqualitative with semi-structured interviews to investigate the phenomenon. The sampleconsists of 6 respondents with a mortgage, providing insights from this specific group andenabling an understanding of their experiences. The theoretical framework of the studyconsists of previous relevant research to the subject matter that can be compared with thestudy's results. The empirical data consists of the collected data from the interviews, which isthen analysed and compared with the theory. The conclusion of this analysis is that theconsumption pattern is perceived to have changed with the mortgage. These changes resultfrom perceived uncertainties associated with the mortgage that altered the mortgagor'sperceptions of their financial situation. The consumption pattern has been experienced tochange in various ways with the mortgage, such as a different view on savings, increasedcautious saving, increased caution in purchases, and altered consumption planning.
