Abstract [en]
This study examines how geographical location, social structures, and cultural factors interact to influence educational opportunities and career choices for youth and young adults with migrant backgrounds in Stockholm’s suburban areas. Through qualitative semi-structured interviews, six participants shared their experiences and perspectives, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities they encountered. The results reveal that limited physical access to resources and territorial stigmatization create structural barriers that impact academic performance and future aspirations. At the same time, the study highlights the importance of social capital, where supportive networks within the family and school help counteract these obstacles. Cultural identity and family expectations play a dual role, serving both as a source of motivation and as a constraint on the individual’s educational ambitions. The study integrates theories of territorial stigmatization, social capital, and geographical segregation with empirical insight, providing a nuanced understanding of how these factors influence individual life choices. Recommendations include reducing resource disparities between schools, implementing mentorship programs, and strengthening collaboration between local communities and schools. The research emphasizes the need for inclusive educational policies that address both physical and psychological barriers to promote social mobility and societal cohesion.
