The Representation of Love in Romance : A Feminist Analysis of Three Contemporary Romance Novels (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay examines the portrayal of love in contemporary romance novels and the difference in the portrayal of love between men and women by using feminist love theory as well as bell hooks and Anthony Giddens definitions of love. The study shows that romance novels predominately represent an alienated love as well as romantic love ideals. However, all novels also showed a considerable amount of confluent- and mutual love, where the partners showed care, affection and respect for each other. The women showed larger amounts of emotional intelligence than the men and less violent tendencies. This reflects the societal assumptions about love, but also how gender norms and patriarchal structures have started to drift and relationships ideals moved towards a more equal standard.
