Causes of suboptimal prehospital pain relief in preschool-aged children : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research shows that preschool children in pre-hospital healthcare do not receive adequate pain relief. Many preschool children do not receive any analgesics despite the presence of pain. Pain treatment for preschool children is very restrained and often insufficient. Aim: The aim was to map reasons why children of preschool age recieved suboptimal pain relief in the pre-hospital setting. Method: The present study was inspired by scoping review as a method. Nine articles make up the result and these were searched in the databases Cinahl and Pubmed. Results: The results of the study were categorized into five different themes: "Lack of experience and training", "Fear of making mistakes", "Challenges in establishing communication and relationship", Pain assessment and pain relief" and "Culture and environment". Conclusion: In this study it emerged that ambulance staff feel insecure in providing pain relief to preschool children, the articles described in the results show that more training and education is required.
