Abstract [en]

Museums face challenges in showcasing large collections due to space constraints, and digital solutions can help expand accessibility and engagement. This research examines the digital valorisation of the Adolf Michaelis Museum's plaster-cast collection through a student-led initiative, contributing insights into the integration of technology in museum curation and education.

Using qualitative methods, including interviews, surveys, and observations, the study explores how student governance impacts the design, implementation, and accessibility of digital mediation tools. It analyses the interaction between digital tools, plaster casts, and visitor engagement in a student-run museum.

The project evolved from an app concept to a tablet-based digital mediation tool aimed at enhancing visitor engagement with multimedia content and personalized pathways. Feedback from surveys and discussions with experts and staff highlighted the need for clearer information, better navigation, and more contextual content, showing the value of digital tools in enriching the visitor experience.

Despite challenges in sustaining the project due to internal conflicts and competing priorities, the study emphasizes the potential of digital tools—especially web-based formats—to improve accessibility, offering flexible solutions for museums with limited resources. It stresses the importance of stable operational structures and institutional support for successful long-term initiatives, advocating for further research on governance models and emerging technologies to support museum projects.
