Children's experiences and strategies of living in families with at least one parent suffering from mental illness: A scoping review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to compile research on children's experiences, coping and other strategies in life with at least one parent suffering from mental illness in one scoping review. The paper consists of eleven scientific articles from three different databases PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO. The collected data were analysed using a thematic analysis method. In the thematic analysis five main themes were identified: responsibility and parentification, stigma and isolation, lack of information and transparency, unpredictability leading to anxiety and fear and coping and other strategies to manage everyday life. The results of the study show that children of parents who suffer from mental illness deal with several different challenges and tensions in their lives. The children develop various coping and other strategies to be able to deal with the parent's illness and cope with everyday life. The study contributes to an increased understanding of children's experiences of living with a mentally ill parent.
