Abstract [en]
The aim of this essay is to identify how many people changed their first names and middlenames in Sweden during August 2024. It also examines why we change our names and howname and identity correlates and influence each other. Further, the essay analyses anddiscusses different patterns and trends in the name changes. The analysis is based on twodifferent materials – statistics from Skatteverket 'The Swedish Tax Agency' which includes alist of all name changes in August, categorized into nine main groups and four additionalgroups, and a complementary survey. The survey includes a handful related questions to namechange and identity and was targeted towards people who have changed their first or middlenames. The most important result is that we change our names to a less common one, shortlyfollowed by changing it to a more common name. The most frequent names that peoplechange from are Anna and Lars and the most frequent names that people change to are Mariaand Erik.
