This study examines the representation of gender roles and power structures in Swedish history textbooks for grades 7–9. By analyzing themes such as the French Revolution, World War II, the Holocaust, and political protests alongside shifts in gender roles, the study highlights disparities in the portrayal of men and women. The findings reveal that men are predominantly depicted as central actors and key drivers of historical and societal changes, while women are often relegated to secondary roles or described in relation to men’s actions. Although some textbooks provide a more balanced perspective, traditional gender hierarchies and stereotypes persist, underscoring the need for a more inclusive approach to historical narratives in educational materials.
