The Relationship between Affect and Prosocial Behavior : A Regression Analysis of Survey Data (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Prosocial behavior is helping behavior not motivated by professional obligations. The purpose of the current study was to investigate if there exists a relationship between affect and prosocial behavior. The hypothesis said that positive affect has a positive relationship with prosocial behavior among adults. For exploration purposes the study included variables for age, gender, negative affect and Serenity. The 116 participants answered a digital survey which included the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Expanded Form (PANAS-X) and The Prosocialness Scale for Adults (PSA). The result of the study showed a significant positive relationship between positive affect and prosocial behavior, which is according to the hypothesis. Gender also showed a significant relationship where women rated themselves higher on prosocial behavior. The variables negative affect, age and Serenity did not show any significant relationship with prosocial behavior. The discussion touches upon the results, which mostly is in accordance with previous research. Future research may investigate possible causality in the relationship for a deeper understanding of the subject.
