From Verses to Reality: The view of women and values in hip-hop (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Hip-hop is a global culture and music style with a strong social and cultural function.

This study aims to examine the norms and representations of women presented in hip-

hop lyrics, as well as how violence and objectification of women are portrayed.

Through a thematic analysis of 24 songs from six of the most-streamed hip-hop

artists, two main themes were identified: the perception of women and the power play

of men, with a total of seven subthemes. The subthemes examined include

objectification, sexualization, stereotypes, power imbalance in relationships, women’s

sexuality as power and control, manipulation and psychological abuse, and

devaluation. The results show that hip-hop songs often objectify women and depict

power structures between women and men. Hegemonic masculinity is equated with

the masculine ideal. Previous studies have shown that prolonged exposure to hip-hop

songs with violence and sexually explicit content directed at women can contribute to

the normalization of negative attitudes among men towards women. At the same time,

the hip-hop genre has the potential to build community and identity formation among

young people. Therefore, hip-hop can play an important role in helping young people

create a sense of belonging, which can serve as a tool to counter and challenge

destructive norms.
