The purpose of this essay is to study what experiences museum educators have working with students from Swedish upper secondary school. This was done to investigate how museum visits can be incorporated effectively in history education. Eight interviews with a total of nine museum educators were conducted through a semi-structured model. Their answers were then interpreted through thematic and theoretical analysis guided by two main concepts, historical consciousness and citizenship education. The interviews showcased a considerable overlap between findings within the field of museum education and the practice of museum educators. Their experiences with upper secondary students highlights the possible uses for museum visits in history education, particularly in order to make abstract concepts like source evaluation more tangible. Additionally, museum workshops focusing on current questions and societal values can be of benefit to students on the cusp of adulthood and active citizenship.
