Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Patients and relatives considered the preservation of dignity at the end of life as important. End-of-life care was described by patients and relatives as inadequate in the emergency department. The lack of time, the stressful environment, the lack of privacy and the lack of preservation of dignity at the end of life were aspects that made the care inadequate. From the perspective of nursing science, care was based on the whole person. Suffering was alleviated through careful care by nurses at the end of life. Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients at the end of life in the emergency department. Method: A general literature review was used for this thesis. Eleven articles were included in the study, nine qualitative and two quantitative. These articles were analyzed to highlight nurses' experiences. Results: The included articles concerned nurses' experiences of end-of-life care in the emergency department and five themes were identified in the results: nurses' lack of knowledge and need for development, caring with a life-saving focus, the importance of the care environment, nurses' support for relatives and the importance of communication. The most significant component that emerged was that nurses perceived that the emergency department environment was not an optimal place for end-of-life care. Conclusion: The results showed a need for improved educational conditions and a need for increased knowledge in the field through education.
