Abstract [en]

This essay is an adaptation analysis of the novel Kärlekens Antarktis and its theatre adaptation Svindel. Both are written by the author and playwright Sara Stridsberg. The study’s purpose is to examine how the different media tell the same story and what happens to its themes and message in the transformation. This is done through a comparative reading of the novel and the play script, as well as a performance analysis of the staged play. This paper focuses on how the environment and the two characters Jägaren and Kristina are portrayed/dramatized in each work. The result of the analysis shows that the themes and message are the same in the novel and the play, but with variations in how they are conveyed. Some signs transcend from the novel to the play while some are expressed in a different way. Although the message is the same in the novel and the play, the analysis shows that the story’s main message about how the dead woman’s story needs to be told is relatively more emphasized in the staged play performance.
