“They appear on our tv screens, but the local paper remains silent” : A qualitative study of female sports journalists in local sports editorial offices (English)
Abstract [en]
This study examines the underrepresentation of women in local sports editorial offices in Sweden and investigates the measures taken to promote gender equality in this field. Using qualitative interviews with journalists and editors, the research highlights the structural and cultural challenges faced by women in sports journalism. The findings reveal significant gender disparities in workforce composition and highlight the persistence of traditional norms and expectations that often hinder women's careers. The study highlights the challenges faced by female sports journalists, such as tokenism, difficulty in obtaining leadership roles and lack of representation. At the same time, the newsrooms' work with equality issues is analysed, where some have introduced recruitment programs and other inclusive strategies to increase the number of female employees. Despite this, a gap is identified between ambition and actual change, which points to the need for more long-term and structural measures. This research contributes to the understanding of gender issues in journalism and offers concrete proposals to create a more equal and inclusive work environment in Swedish sports newsrooms. An increased representation of women can not only strengthen the work culture, but also contribute to a more varied and fair mediacoverage of sport.
