"The purpose is always there" : A qualitative study of probation officers' experiences of the Krimstics method. (English)
Abstract [en]

This study explores the implementation of the method Krimstics within the Swedish probation system, emphasizing its impact on probation officers’ professional roles and practices. The research uses a qualitative methodology, incorporating interviews with probation officers. The findings indicate that Krimstics has contributed to a more structured and evidence-based approach to probation work, promoting professionalism and providing officers with additional tools for client interaction. Further the study finds that the probation officers' double role combining control and support has become more balanced since the implementation of Krimstics. In addition to examining the method’s impact, the study investigates the challenges and opportunities associated with using Krimstics in practice. Opportunities include increased support through continuous training and the potential to enhance recidivism prevention. Challenges, however, underscore the need for individualized adaptations of the method to client groups facing difficulties, such as those with neuropsychiatric difficulties. Additionally, the foundational training in Krimstics is identified as insufficient, as it does not provide the necessary understanding for an effective application of the method in practice.

By applying implementation theory and role theory, the study provides a theoretical framework to analyze these findings. The research highlights the importance of ongoing education, motivation from probation officers and an in-depth understanding of the method to address gaps in the method’s implementation. While Krimstics shows potential for reducing recidivism, the results emphasize the need for a tailored approach to enhance its effectiveness across varying contexts. This study contributes to the field of social work by offering insights into the dynamics of implementing evidence-based methods, the evolving role of probation officers, and a broader understanding for recidivism prevention within the criminal justice system.
