The semiotisc reveal: The role as a woman in Paradise Hotel : A semiotic study about female representation and its development in Paradise Hotel (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In reality TV and visual media women are objectified and sexualized, and researchers highlight the problematic and stereotypical aspects of female representation. However, signs of a more sustainable representation have been observed, where women reject traditional gender roles and female characters become more varied and balanced. Thus, this study aims to explore female representation in visual media. The phenomenon is analysed through a semiotic image analysis of female participants in the reality series Paradise Hotel. The empirical data consisted of video material, where introductions were used, from seasons 10, 13 and 16, to observe how representation is depicted and whether a change has occurred across the seasons. Representation, gender theory, “The male gaze”, femininity and objectification theory constitute the theoretical framework the study is using to discuss the analysis and results.

The previous research aligns with the study’s demonstrated results. The study found that most of the representations were depicted problematically and overlapped with unsustainable female representation. However, signs of a more sustainable female representation were also observed through power and norm-breaking actions. Lastly, a development towards a more sustainable representation was noted throughout the seasons. The study found a pattern between the reduced presence of the production and a weakening sexualization and objectification of the female participants, leading to stronger representations regarding power and norm-breaking actions. Despite this change, societal issues did remain. Paradise Hotel’s portrayal of reality produces norms, stereotypes and representations that were largely problematic and unsustainable.
