Presidential Debate - A competition for discursive power? : A critical discourse analysis of the 2024 Presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris with an emphasis on social inclusion (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study investigates the discursive power dynamics in the 2024 U.S. presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, focusing on social inclusion. It analyzes how rhetorical strategies and tropes are employed to construct and challenge ideological positions within the key themes of immigration and abortion. Using critical discourse analyses (CDA), the research identifies the power structures and ideological conflicts shaping the candidates’ rhetoric. The findings reveal that Trump utilized exclusionary rhetoric to frame immigrants as threats and bolster a right-wing populist agenda. Harris, by contrast, employed inclusive language, while framing abortion as a matter of human rights and women’s autonomy, however she avoided using the same rhetorics in the discussion about immigration. These rhetorical strategies reflect contrasting ideological frameworks that influence how social inclusion is articulated in political discourse. The study highlights the role of language in reproducing or challenging dominant power structures and shaping political agendas. By situating these findings within contemporary ideological conflicts, the research underscores the centrality of rhetoric in political communication and its impact on societal values.
