Syftet med studien är att utöka förståelsen för prostitution som process genom att undersöka under vilka omständigheter kvinnor i Sverige hamnar i och tar sig ur prostitution, med fokus på deras individuella upplevelser. Studien syftar också till att belysa hur kvinnor i Sverige hamnar i prostitution utifrån feministiska och strukturella perspektiv. Prostitution är ett allvarligt samhällsproblem, då sexköp är en typ av sexuellt våld som män utför gentemot kvinnor. Ett behov har identifierats gällande kunskap om prostitution som process, då det inte finns tillräckligt med stödinsatser för att fånga upp unga personer som befinner sig i riskzonen för att hamna i prostitution. Prostitution som process förändras i takt med att samhället förändras, och därför är det viktigt att forska kring och kontinuerligt utveckla kunskapen om ämnet.

Denna studie är av kvalitativ karaktär, där tio kvinnors berättelser om vägen in, upprätthållandet av och vägen ut ur prostitution analyseras via en tematisk analys. Studiens resultat påvisar ett starkt samband mellan sexuella övergrepp och att senare sälja sex, dock inte som en direkt konsekvens utan som en faktor bland många andra. Studiens utmärkande fynd är rollen av en tidigt sexuell debut i prostitution som process, samt hur kvinnor använder dissociation som en överlevnadsstrategi. Slutligen lyfter studien hur kvinnornas utsatta position i ett patriarkatiskt samhälle banar vägen för prostitution, samt hur skammen fungerar som ett hinder och därmed upprätthålls prostitutionen.

The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of prostitution as a process by examining the circumstances under which women in Sweden enter and exit prostitution, with a focus on their individual experiences. The study also aims to shed light on how women in Sweden end up in prostitution from feminist and structural perspectives. Prostitution is a serious social problem, as purchasing sex is a form of sexual violence perpetrated by men against women. A need for increased knowledge regarding prostitution as a process has been identified, as there is insufficient support available to help young people who are at risk of entering prostitution. Prostitution as a process evolves as society changes, and therefore it is important to continuously research and develop knowledge on the subject.

This study is qualitative in nature, where the stories of ten women regarding their paths into, maintenance of, and exit from prostitution are analyzed using thematic analysis. The study's results reveal a strong correlation between sexual abuse and later engaging in sex work, though not as a direct consequence, but rather as one of many contributing factors. A key finding in the study is the role of an early sexual debut in the process of entering prostitution, as well as how women use dissociation as a survival strategy. Finally, the study highlights how women's vulnerable position in a patriarchal society paves the way for prostitution, and how shame acts as a barrier, thus sustaining prostitution.
